Rocky Mount, N.C. – The Piedmont College women’s tennis team wrapped up competition at the USA South Tournament with a 5-1 loss at the hands of #2 seed Methodist University Saturday. The final three singles matches were left unfinished once the Monarchs reached the clinching fifth point.
The Monarchs took two of the three doubles points to begin the afternoon as freshmen Christian Wade and Tatiana Burkett came through with the win for Piedmont in the #2 doubles spot. The freshmen pulled out an 8-6 win against Davi Barbour and Riley Zopp.
The Lady Lions were taken down 8-2 in the #1 and #2 doubles spots but saw a solid start in singles play as several Lady Lions took points early for the lead, but eventually the Methodist squad proved to be too much as Piedmont was unable to secure any wins in the singles competition.
The roster of six freshmen compiled an impressive record this season as they came on strong late in the season to finish well and post a winning record in conference play. That marks the fourth straight season that Head Coach Shane Wood’s Lady Lions have done so.
The Lady Lions end the season at 8-11 overall but with a 6-5 record in league play within the USA South. Piedmont won four of the last five matches of the season and advanced to the semi-finals in the USA South tournament for the first time as a member of the league.
