Lady Lions cruise to shutout

Senior Shayna Rogers scored late to solidify a dominant performance on the road with the Lady Lions winning 3-0 over USA South foe Huntingdon College.

Montgomery, AL – The Piedmont College women’s soccer team was dominant once more in USA South action picking up a 3-0 victory over the hosting Hawks of Huntingdon College Saturday afternoon on the road. For PC, it is the 7th time the Lady Lions have shutout a conference opponent in their nine USA South games play so far this season.

Piedmont dominated more than just the score column as the Lady Lions outshot the Hawks 26 to five on the afternoon while taking six corners and giving up just one to the home team. PC forced Huntingdon keeper Katie Bonner to make 14 saves as well putting 17 of those 26 shots on frame throughout the day.

It was Savannah Castles who scored Piedmont’s first goal of the day when she headed away a Kelsey Schaffernoth corner kick in the 32nd minute. For Castles, it was her sixth goal of the 2014 season, 2nd most on the squad behind only newcomer Kalyn Dumanowsky. Schaffernoth also picked up her first assist of the season on the first half score.

PC would go to the half leading 1-0 in control though Huntingdon would make it interesting early in the second half as a shot for the home team found the post in the 59th minute while the rebound led to another HC shot that Piedmont keeper Michaela Gardner was able to save and keep the clean sheet.

After the close call, senior Shayna Rogers stretched the game to a more comfortable margin turning on a ball played to her just inside the box and smashing it home for a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute. Getting the assist on the goal was Dumanowsky who found Rogers just inside the box with a clever ball through the back line.

In the 76th minute, sophomore Megan Hatfield added to her season totals when she converted on a PK to make it 3-0 Lady Lions, the final margin in the USA South contest. All three of Hatfield’s goals this season have come in the Lady Lions’ last three games as she also earned the assist on the game-winning goal against Maryville this past Wednesday night.

Two keepers combined for the clean sheet by PC with junior Michaela Gardner and freshman Ashlie Gonzalez both seeing minutes on Saturday afternoon in Alabama. Gardner played the first 79-plus with Gonzalez finishing off the effort as Gardner has not been scored on in conference play since allowing a late score against LaGrange back on October 1st, more than 370 consecutive scoreless minutes by the junior netminder.

With the 3-0 victory, Piedmont improves to 11-4-1 overall and is now 7-1-1 in conference play, the exact same record that the Lady Lions had through nine games in league play during the 2013 season one year ago. The Green and Gold also wrap up the regular season with the same three opponents from the end of last season, but this time around, the trio of contests comes in the friendly confines rather than on the road.

The Lady Lions start their three-game stint at home to end the regular season with Greensboro College coming to town this Friday for a 4:30 pm kickoff on October 24. The contest, along with the remaining two on the schedule after that, will be aired live on the Mane Event Broadcasting Network.
