Wood heater suspected as cause in another Banks County fire

This image from the Banks County Fire Department shows the smoldering remains of a Commerce cabin that burned to the ground on Jan. 30, 2023.

A wood heater may be to blame for a fire that destroyed a cabin in Commerce overnight.

Around 10:30 p.m. on January 30, units from Banks County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of a structure fire at 164 Holly Lake Road.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a small cabin fully involved with fire. They extinguished the flames but the cabin was a total loss.

“The cause of the fire was investigated and was ruled accidental,” says Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols. “A wood heater could not be ruled out as the cause.”

The occupant was home at the time of the fire, but no one was injured.

This was the second suspected wood heater-related fire in Banks County on Monday. Before dawn on January 30, fire broke out in a detached garage at a house on Hooper Road. Firefighters suspect a wood heater may have ignited that blaze.
