The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for North and West Central Georgia.
The Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday, Jan. 10, through Saturday morning, Jan. 11, for the following counties: Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dade, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Henry, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Murray, Newton, North Fulton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Rabun, Rockdale, South Fulton, Towns, Union, Walker, Walton, White, Whitfield.
A wintry mix of precipitation is possible. Snow and sleet accumulations in the mountains could average between 3 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.
Farther south to the Interstate 20 corridor, a mixture of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain is likely. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are possible, with icing amounts around a tenth of an inch possible.
The Winter Storm Watch also extends into the mountains of southwest North Carolina, including the areas around Franklin, Cashiers, and Cullowhee.
The heavy snow will make many roads impassable and may produce widespread power outages due to the weight of the snow on tree limbs and power lines. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes. Stay alert to local road conditions.
Now Habersham is closely monitoring this developing weather system and will post frequent updates here and on our Facebook page.
