Tributes

The 24-year-old LeCroy passed away Sunday January 15, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital. UGA offensive lineman Devin Willock also died in the pre-dawn crash in Athens. Their deaths came just hours after the Bulldogs and their fans celebrated the team’s second consecutive national championship in a ceremony at Sanford Stadium.

UGA quarterback Stetson Bennett on Tuesday joined other members of the UGA football program publicly mourning their loss.

“Dev made me feel safe. Chandler made me feel happy. The pain will fade but that won’t so I smile when I cry. Just wish I could hug them again,” Bennett posted to Instagram.

In a statement released over the weekend, UGA head football coach Kirby Smart paid tribute to LeCroy.

“Chandler was a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every single day,” Smart said.

The wreck also injured UGA offensive linesmen Warren McClendon, 21, and staff member Tori Bowles, 26. The hospital released McClendon Sunday evening and still had Bowles listed as critical, according to 11 Alive news.

‘Chandler loved Georgia Football’

A Northeast Georgia native, LeCroy was an alumnus of UGA where she earned both her undergraduate and master’s degrees. She worked as a Recruiting Analyst with the University of Georgia Athletic Department.

“Chandler loved Georgia Football more than anyone we knew,” her family wrote in her obituary. They noted her willingness to give so much of her time to help with recruiting. Her passion and love for Georgia extended to hosting recruits, sending cards to families, and helping plan and decorate for recruiting events.

“She had a way of making each and every prospect and their families feel like her own family,” they said.

LeCroy’s job didn’t stop at recruiting.

“She made it her responsibility to help every single entity in the building, whether that be defensive and offensive support staff, nutrition, equipment, operations and any department that needed a helping hand. Every department of Georgia Football lost a member of their team and she will forever be missed,” her obituary states.

Toccoa ties

LeCroy was a 2016 graduate of Stephens County High School. She was a member of the school’s Competition Cheer team when they won their first ever region championship and placed their highest in state competition.

After graduation, LeCroy’s family says she continued to be an “active and invested part of the cheer program.”
