Traffic stop lands two local men in jail on drug charges

Two Northeast Georgia remain in jail on drug charges after being arrested following a traffic stop last week in Alto.

Habersham County deputies arrested Cody Ray Bennett, 28, of Cornelia and Jonathan Tyler Norton, 22, of Toccoa during a traffic stop at Railroad Avenue and Bennet Street.

Officers pulled over the men shortly after midnight on May 28 when Bennett apparently failed to stop at a stop sign. That stop led to both men being charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Bennet also was charged with driving on a revoked or suspended license and failure to stop at a stop sign.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office requested the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO) to assist with the narcotics investigation.

Norton remains in the Habersham County jail on $11,200 bond according to online jail records. Bennett remains in jail on $13,600 bond.

Authorities say it’s still an active investigation.

ARDEO encourages citizens to report suspicious drug activity via direct message on the agency’s Facebook page, by calling 706-348-7410, or by contacting local authorities.
