Pipe bomb found in Demorest, GBI Bomb Unit investigating

A surveyor searching for a monument got more than he bargained for when he found something suspicious in the woods in Demorest.  It was a large piece of PVC pipe with wires coming out of it. The pipe bomb was located near a creek on residential property off of Highway 115, according to Habersham County Sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Wurtz. He says deputies were called to the scene at 11:16 a.m. Monday. They secured the area and requested assistance from the GBI Bomb Unit.

The GBI responded, collected the item and disposed of it.

The GBI informed him late Monday that “the device contained material and was assembled in a manner that is commonly known as a pipe bomb.” Wurtz says the device did not explode during disposal.

Authorities do not know how the device got there or who is responsible for it. Wurtz says state officials will test the device to see if any fingerprints or other evidence can be lifted from it.

The Sheriff’s Office is not disclosing any other details about where the pipe bomb was found other than to say it was not located in the vicinity of Daniel Road where several similar devices were found and disposed of last year.

The GBI Bomb Unit is handling the investigation.
