Snakebit hiker one of two rescued from White County trail

It was a true ‘labor’ day weekend for local and state emergency workers who rescued two hikers from the Raven Cliff Falls Trail north of Helen.

White County and Helen Fire and EMS responded to a report of a hiker suffering from a venomous snakebite around 12:30 p.m. on September 5.

Because of the location, the Georgia State Patrol Aviation unit was automatically requested to assist, says White County Public Safety Director David Murphy.

“While the first team was entering the trail to make contact with the first patient, a hiker reported a second patient with an ankle injury,” says Murphy. A second EMS unit was requested to respond to that patient.

After making contact with the snakebit hiker, teams carried her out of the woods to a waiting ambulance. The GSP helicopter helped pull the second victim to safety, using a longline rescue.

EMS transported both patients to local hospitals where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
