Sloan Yowell Stribling, Il

Sloan Yowell Stribling, II, 67, of Demorest, GA, passed away on January 10, 2019, as a result of a sudden illness.

Born on November 23, 1951, in Athens, GA, Sloan Stribling was the son of Marion and Kathryn Stribling. He lived his entire life in the Habersham Mills Community. The early portion of his education was in the public schools in Habersham County, and his high school years were spent at The Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN, from which he graduated on June 1, 1969. He attended Piedmont College in Demorest, GA.

Sloan’s 27-year-career with Habersham Mills culminating in his service as Fiber Department Manager ended in 1999 when the mill closed, bringing to an end an era of the Stribling family employment in Habersham Mills. From the day the mill opened in 1906 until the day it closed in 1999, there was always at least one member of the Stribling family employed by the mill, and Sloan was the last family member to carry on that impressive legacy.

Several years as a volunteer firefighter in Habersham County were among his achievements, as well as an enjoyment of the outdoors, especially as an avid hunter and fisherman. He had a special affinity for music and enjoyed singing and playing the guitar. He liked sports, especially football, and was known for his great love for animals, having given a good home to a number of rescued animals.

Sloan Stribling was preceded in death by his father, Marion Winters Stribling, and his brother, Jack Stiles Stribling. He is survived by his mother, Kathryn Stiles Stribling, of Athens, GA; two brothers, John Stribling and wife Carol of Clarkesville, GA, and Zachary Stribling of Athens, GA. Survivors also include one sister, Mary Stribling of Athens, GA; a sister-in-law, Brenda Stribling of Roswell, GA; two nephews, Jason Stribling, of Demorest, GA; and Jonathan Stribling of Sautee, GA; two nieces, Carrie Stribling Henry and Abbe Stribling, both of Roswell, GA, along with two great-nieces, Annie Henry and Kite Stribling, and one great-nephew, Parker Stribling. Left behind also to mourn his passing are his special animal friends: dogs Punkin, Dixie and Sadie, and cats Tygger and Gizzy.

A memorial service for Sloan will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Hillside Memorial Chapel in Clarkesville. The service will be preceded by visitation with his family beginning at 12:00 noon at the funeral home with interment of ashes to follow the service in the Habersham Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in his memory made to either the Habersham Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 521, Clarkesville, GA, 30523, or to the Habersham County Humane Center, P. O. Box 1442, Clarkesville, GA, 30523.
