Sheldon “Shelley” Ellis Baum

obit flagSheldon Ellis Baum, Shelley, 79, of Cornelia, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia.

He was embraced in love by his wife and children as he let go of their hands and took the hands of those that preceded him in death; father and mother, Dr. Louis and Dorothy Baum, brother, Robert Baum and father and mother in law, Mick and Barbara Edwards.

Shelley was born June 30, 1936 in Flint Michigan to Dr. Louis and Dorothy Baum. Shelley was later joined by brother, Bob and sister, Blake.

Shelley graduated from Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, MI followed by proudly becoming a wolverine at the University of Michigan where he graduated in 1958.

Following two years in Korea, having served in the US Army, Shelley received his medical degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa where he received a Scholarship Award for the Highest Scholastic Standing.

He made the decision to dedicate himself to the joyous birthing process and after a four year residency program, lived the remainder of his career as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist in various geographic areas to include proudly serving in the US Navy, Groton, CT until settling down in Habersham County. Dr. Baum retired from his medical practice in 1998.

Shelley (Dr. Baum) felt honored to be part of each and every patient’s growing family. Dr Baum’s wife often marveled, “with the many interrupted family meals, outings, celebrations, deep slumbers and even vacations, due to the needs of his patients, he NEVER complained, a testament to the dedicated man he was.”

In earlier years, when not at his medical practice or hospital, Shelley could be found coaching or cheering for one of his children’s/grand children’s football or basketball teams. In later years, it was tradition to watch Michigan football with his family, being with his family gave Shelley such enjoyment and pride.

Shelley is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Jodi Baum and loving children, son, Randy Baum, daughter, Terri McClung (Warren) grandson Justin Morris, great grandson, Colton Morris, granddaughter, Jessica Morris, daughter Michelle Baum, son Devin Baum, son, Brandon Baum (Mary Heather) grandson’s Carter and Foster Baum and lastly, his faithful companions, wheaten terriers, Charlie and Chewy.

“GO BLUE” to the most cherished, loving husband, Dad, Pop and Peepaw. Your example will continue to inspire and guide us. We love you!
