Ninth District Opportunity holds grand reopening

Ninth District Opportunity (NDO) is working to get the word out about its new location in Habersham County. The local nonprofit recently held a grand reopening at its Cornelia office.

Ninth District Opportunity “is a nonprofit organization that helps families in crisis,” states NDO Housing and Program Planner Mike Fisher. The nonprofit helps pay power bills, rent and deposits and helps families move towards self sufficiency.

For 13 years NDO operated out of its old Commerce Parkway location. This past May, the organization moved to its new location at 1030 North Main Plaza in Cornelia.

Fisher explains the move was based on the area having a great need for the programs the nonprofit provides. “Our hope is we can have more families we can help, we can find more that haven’t heard of us that can soon hear of us when they get into these situations of crisis”.

NDO serves 27 counties in northern Georgia. It offers full services in Habersham, Banks, Dawson, Forsyth, Franklin, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White.

Fisher says the agency is preparing for its winter heating assistance program. It begins in November and, according to Fisher, “depending on age and income we will make a one time payment between $310 and $350 dollars to help with their heat and utility bills.”

Along with the heating program, the nonprofit also offers assistance with housing, education, medical and weatherizaton needs.

The Cornelia office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
