Nine months after the Demorest City Council finalized their purchase of a new fire truck, the council has an estimated arrival date for the fire department’s much-needed addition.

The new fire truck is scheduled to arrive by the end of March after it was purchased with SPLOST funds in April of 2021. The purchase followed months of discussion and debate surrounding which fire truck model to buy; January and February of 2021 were marked by the council, former Mayor Rick Austin and former Fire Cheif Ken Ranalli’s back-and-forth surrounding what the fire department needed and what the city would buy.

At their Mar. 30, 2021 meeting, the council unanimously voted to purchase an E-One fire truck over a Marion firetruck the city’s fire chief proposed buying. The city saved around $200,000 with the purchase of the E-One model.

Demorest Fire Chief Johnathan Knight told the council at their Tuesday meeting that the new truck should arrive no later than the end of next month, bringing a much-needed upgrade to the city’s fire department.

The department will have to go pick the truck up, but Knight says the furthest they’ll have to go to get the truck is to Winder. From Demorest, that drive would take about an hour.
