Banks and government offices will be closed on Monday, and many people will be traveling this Memorial Day. But behind the fun and busyness of this long holiday weekend is its somber significance.
Communities across the country will hold ceremonies, concerts, parades, and other events to honor the U.S. military men and women who lost their lives serving our nation. Here’s a list of some of the events scheduled in and around Northeast Georgia to honor them.
Monday, May 29
Barrow County
- Memorial Day Program 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Winder Cultural Arts Center at 105 East Athens Street in Winder.
Dawson County
- Memorial Day Service 9:30 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at 186 Recreation Road in Dawsonville.
Franklin County
- Memorial Service 9 a.m. at the Memorial Plaza at the Franklin County Courthouse at 9592 Lavonia Road in Carnesville.
Gwinnett County
- Dacula Memorial Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. from Hebron Baptist Church at 202 Hebron Church Road.
Habersham County
- Memorial Day Ceremony 10 a.m. at the VFW Memorial Park at 1492 Smith Loop Road in Demorest.
Hall County
- Memorial Day Parade 10 a.m. from First Baptist Church Gainesville down Green Street to EE Butler Parkway and Spring Street, hosted by Paul E. Bolding American Legion Post 7.
- Remembrance Ceremony 10 a.m. at Veterans Park on Main Street in Lula.
- Northwinds Symphonic Band Memorial Day Concert 7:30 p.m.- 9 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Gainesville on 751 Green Street.
Hart County
- Memorial Day Ceremony 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on the courthouse square at 185 West Franklin Street in Hartwell.
Rabun County
- Memorial Day Ceremony 11 a.m. at the Rabun County Courthouse located at 25 Courthouse Square in Clayton.
Stephens County
- Memorial Day Ceremony 11 a.m. in the pavilion at Camp Toccoa at Currahee at 2351 Ayersville Road. Please plan to arrive at 10:30 AM so you can be seated in time for the beginning of the ceremony.
White County
- Memorial Day Program 9 a.m. Freedom Park in downtown Cleveland, hosted by the Roy Head Post #16 of the American Legion.
- Memorial Day Ceremony 9:30 a.m. at Helen Veterans Park at 726 Brucken Strasse, hosted by the Northeast Georgia Veterans Society.
