Man injured in Alto wreck dies

The Dodge Charger crossed over the median into the southbound lanes after impact.

More charges may be pending against an alleged DUI driver following the death of a passenger injured in a wreck earlier this month in Alto. Jerry Madwell of Flowery Branch passed away on November 16, twelve days after he was injured in a two-car crash at the intersection of GA 365 South and Crane Mill Road.

Madwell was the front seat passenger in a 2009 Dodge Charger that struck a 2001 Honda Accord that ran into the Charger’s path in the intersection. He was one of six people injured in the wreck. He was 57  years old.

William Patrick of Demorest was driving the Accord. He’s currently charged with DUI, failure to yield and two counts of serious injury by motor vehicle.  The accident remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT).

“SCRT is investigating and charges will be upgraded when the investigation is complete if appropriate,” says Cpl. Dallas Van Scoten of the Georgia State Patrol.
