Friday night a crowd gathered at Raider Stadium in Mt. Airy for a memorial soccer match honoring former Raider soccer player, Edgar Flores. Flores graduated from Habersham Central High School in 2012. He was working as a police officer in Dekalb County when a suspect shot and killed him during a traffic stop on December 13, 2018.

Edgar Flores died four days before his birthday. He was just 24 years old.

In a moving pre-game ceremony, the Habersham Central Raider soccer team presented Flores’ mother, fiancée, and brother with a jersey with his team number on it. They included a plaque with the #17 jersey that included a scripture verse and the phrase, “Born to Wear the Uniform.”

HCHS soccer coaches shared memories of Flores and spoke of his legacy, a legacy captured in a series of phrases written on the plaque:

Love of the Game

Infectious Smile

Brother’s Keeper

Self-Sacrifice

Ambitious, Industrious & Opportunistic

“May we always remember your impact on others and the way you blessed each of our lives,” the plaque reads. “May we always remember those in uniform.”
