Lady Eagles to play in NC All-Star game

Two Lady Eagles basketball players have earned a spot in the 2020 North Carolina Private School All-Star Basketball Game.

Derin Akdeniz of Izmir, Turkey, and Aileen Marquez of Asheville, North Carolina,  will play for the East team in the All-Star game scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29 at Providence Day School in Charlotte.

Head coaches and athletic directors from across the state nominated over 100 players for consideration for the game. Selection committees then worked to narrow the rosters down into two teams for each game that represent all of the classifications and regions from North Carolina.
“We are so excited that two of our seniors have been selected to participate in this year’s game.  This is the fifth year out of seven that Rabun Gap has had seniors participate in the N.C. Private School All-Star Game,” said Dale Earnhardt, head girls basketball coach and Rabun Gap’s director of athletics. “Derin and Aileen had outstanding senior seasons for the Lady Eagles and are well-deserving of this opportunity.”

The games will take place in Mosack Athletic Center on the campus of Providence Day

School. The girls’ game will start at 1:00 p.m. followed by the boys game at 2:30 p.m. Admission for the games will be $7 for adults, $5 for students, and children under the age of 8 will be admitted for free. In addition to the game, all players and coaches will participate in a community service

project on the afternoon of Friday, February 28 in the Charlotte community.
