The House delivered its article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump to the Senate on Monday.
Congressman Jamie Raskin read the article aloud in the Senate chamber.
On Jan. 13, the House impeached Trump for a second time, charging him with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the deadly Capitol riot a week earlier. The article also cites Trump’s Jan. 2 phone call urging Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to ‘find’ enough votes to overturn the state’s election results as part of his effort “to subvert and obstruct the certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election.”
Senators will be sworn in as members of the impeachment court on Tuesday, January 26. Then both the impeachment managers and the president’s defense team will draft their briefs for trial.
Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, the Senate pro tempore, will preside over the trial instead of Chief Justice John Roberts.
