Higgins running for county commission

Habersham Planning Commission member and local construction project manager D. Higgins is running for the Habersham County Board of Commissioners. Higgins’ campaign released a statement today announcing his candidacy for the District 2 seat currently held by Andrea Harper. Harper is not seeking re-election.

Higgins is a lifelong resident of Cornelia. He’s the son of former longtime Cornelia mayor Don Higgins. He works with his father as project manager at Higgins Construction.

His announcement says D. Higgins “has a passion for assisting the development, growth and overall quality of life for families living in Habersham County.” He has volunteered with several community organizations including the Northeast Georgia Housing Authority, the Habersham County Library Board and Habersham Rotary. He also is a Habersham Chamber of Commerce Leadership Habersham graduate.

“I am running for county commission because the experience I have gained working as a contractor for various municipalities and serving in leadership roles in the planning commission and housing authority has given me insight into the potential and challenges of Habersham County,” Higgins says. “I believe my experience brings a unique viewpoint to the position of county commissioner.”

Higgins is a 1997 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in building construction, and a 1992 graduate of Habersham Central High School.

He and his wife Sarah have two children, Aubrey, 13, and Mallory, 10. The family attends Level Grove Baptist Church in Cornelia.
