Grady Lee Poole

Grady Lee Poole, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully at his home of almost 24 years in Clarkesville, Georgia on Monday, May 16, 2016. He was born on September 6, 1924 to parents William Leander and Josie Bell Emory Poole in Canton, Georgia. He grew up as a farmers son and was one of eight children. In the early 1940’s, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to look for work to help support his family. There, he met the love of his life and married Wanslie LaTrelle Ivey on June 2, 1944. He worked in the insurance sales industry before being drafted into the Army for WWII. He served at Camp Lee in Virginia. He eventually settled in Southwest Atlanta with Wanslie, where they had two children- daughter Jan Holbrook and son David Poole. Over the years, he worked in insurance, real estate, trucking industry, and at the post office. He always wanted to return to farming and gardening. So in August 1992 he and Wanslie moved to Clarkesville to retire, garden two patches of land, fish with his grandsons, and entertain visitors. He loved to tell stories of his childhood growing up in Canton in a farm. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Clarkesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, and other family members. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by son in law Jon Holbrook and daughter in law Elaine Poole, 5 grandchildren and their spouses- Michelle and Tony Homier; Michael and Jennifer Holbrook; Nick and Maribeth Poole; Philip and Danielle Poole; Alex Poole; 5 great grandchildren- Jonathan Holbrook; Riley, Paleigh, and Zoely Homier; and Colton Poole. He is also survived by sister in law Elaine Payne; brother in law and sister in law Joe and Pat Ivey; along with several nieces, nephews, and other family members.

The visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 from 2-4 PM and from 6-8 PM and prior to the service on Friday morning from 10-11 AM at the funeral home. The celebration of life services will be on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Hillside Memorial Chapel, Clarkesville, GA. Thereafter, family and close friends will gather in Canton at 4 PM to return Grady to his final resting place at Oakdale Baptist Church Cemetery beside his mother and father per his wishes.
