Mrs. Evelyn Fowler Gaines, age 88, of Toccoa passed away Tuesday February 28, 2017 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Born August 31, 1928 in Royston, Ga, she was the daughter of the late John Harrison Fowler, Sr. and Decie Fowler Fowler. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Harrison Fowler, Jr.
Family members include her husband of 69 years, Roy Gaines; daughter, Connie Gaines; son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Kim Gaines; grandson, Crayton and Vanessa Gaines; great grandchildren, Owen Gaines and Bella Gaines; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Gaines was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Toccoa. She was the former co-owner of WNEG Radio and TV.
She was a graduate of Athens High School and attended the University of Georgia.
Mrs. Gaines was active for many years in the work of the Toccoa Chapter of Camp Fire Girls, Inc. She also served on the National Council of Camp Fire Girls, Inc. and was the recipient of the National Luther Halsey Gulick Award in 1969.
She was a member of the Pilot Club of Toccoa and was instrumental in the founding of “Lifeline”, a personal emergency response system which allowed people to live at home with independence with a feeling of safety and peace of mind.
When the current Stephens County Hospital was built, her efforts as a member of the Hospital Auxiliary helped extend its work to include an auxiliary staffed snack bar for the benefit of those visiting loved ones in the hospital setting.
Funeral services will be held at two-thirty Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church of Toccoa with Dr. John Brown and Dr. Henry Fields officiating.
Entombment will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Ken Brady, Herb Masten, David Austin, Ron Matheson, Steve Bell, and Buzz Tathum. The Pilot Club of Toccoa members will serve as honorary escort.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 5pm – 8pm Saturday, March 4, 2017.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Toccoa.
