Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County is celebrating another successful fundraising effort.

The agency’s seventh annual rubber duck race on the Soque River raised more than $21,000 to support literacy programs in Habersham County.

The race was held Friday, July 20 at Pitts Park in Clarkesville during the city’s Red, White & Tunes event. The race normally takes place in May during the Mountain Laurel Festival but was postponed this year due to the weather.

Approximately 1,900 ducks raced the quarter-mile course down the Soque. The first three finishers won cash prizes.

This year’s winners are: Eric Pereira, 1st place – $1000; Stephanie Kromelis, 2nd place – $500; and Peyton Thomas, 3rd place, $250.

“Peyton’s dad bought the ticket for his son, who lives in Indiana,” says Volunteers for Literacy (VFL) coordinator Phylecia Wilson.

Ticket sales were doubled by a $10,000 matching grant. All proceeds will go to benefit programs that promote and foster literacy in Habersham County.
