A Gainesville man is charged with vehicular homicide after investigators say he crashed his SUV on top of a truck while fleeing from a traffic stop, killing the driver.
Christopher Wayne Sosebee, 30, faces multiple charges in connection with the accident which also seriously injured a woman, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
A Hall County deputy attempted to pull over Sosebee’s Chevrolet Equinox on Bethel Road in the northwest part of the county around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, says GSP spokesperson Lt. Stephanie Stallings. Sosebee sped away when the deputy activated his emergency lights.
Sosebee traveled approximately one-half mile before he ran off the road in a curve and overcorrected. The Equinox traveled across Bethel Road, up a rocky embankment, and then back down the embankment into the eastbound lane. “The Equinox then struck and landed on top of a Chevrolet 2500 work truck, before overturning and coming to rest in the westbound lane,” Stallings says.
The truck driver, Brian Allen Hayes, 48, of Gainesville, died at the scene. The front seat passenger in Sosebee’s vehicle, Tiffany Lynn Franklin, 28, of Gainesville, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Sosebee was immediately taken into custody then transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Other felony charges against Sosebee include fleeing or attempting to elude and serious injury by vehicle. He’s also charged with driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, speeding, failure to maintain lane, violating tire and window requirements, having an altered tag and expired driver’s license, and misdemeanor obstruction of law enforcement.
The Georgia State Patrol-Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is assisting with the investigation and other charges are possible, Stallings says. She adds, there was no contact between the patrol vehicle and the Equinox.
A portion of Bethel Road was closed for approximately 3 and one-half hours while the crash was investigated.
