Driver charged with DUI in wreck that seriously injured a Toccoa biker

A motorcyclist was airlifted to the hospital following an accident on Big-A Road in Toccoa.

55-year-old Donald James Johnston was driving a Honda VT1300, attempting to turn left onto Big A from US 123 when a southbound vehicle hit him. Johnston and his bike went airborne, traveling 78 feet before stopping, Troopers say.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. Friday, April 30.

The Georgia State Patrol says another Toccoa man, 59-year-old John William McKibben, was driving the Nissan Pathfinder that struck Johnston. Eyewitnesses reported seeing him run the red light. Troopers charged McKibben with a red light violation, causing serious injury by vehicle and DUI.

Johnston was flown to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment of his injuries.
