If you enjoy a shopping experience that includes an abundance of merch, and if you also love supporting a good cause, Community Helping Place in Dahlonega, Georgia, needs to be on your “Must Visit” list. Proceeds from this nonprofit go toward helping the folks in Lumpkin County, where, among other things, they helped over 19,000 individuals and distributed over 314,000 pounds of food in 2023 alone.
Apparently there are enough people donating their goods to this good charity that two buildings are needed to house it all!
Vintage and jewelry
With its stone masonry columns and wide covered porch, the largest building in this complex has a country store feel… and that’s before you get inside and see the neat and tidy way the store is arranged. There is even an attractive vintage section where items have been researched and priced accordingly. For the Savvy Picker, sections like this are look-don’t-buy areas because the merch has usually been marked up beyond what I can sell it for, but looking at great vintage items always makes me happy!
But what makes me happier is finding great bargains, and there were plenty of those to be found in the large jewelry section.
(TheSavvyPicker.com)When I was there, everything was half-price! This meant bracelets and rings were only a dollar each, and necklaces were $1.50. With prices like that, I did some serious damage, loading up on some really neat costume jewelry, which they held at the counter for me while I kept shopping.
Books and more
The store also boasts a very nice, clean children’s section where books are only twenty-five cents each. There, I was thrilled to discover quite a few vintage books, including these adorable Raggedy Ann titles in beautiful shape, which will sell in my store for $7.00 each. That’s a 2800% profit per book!
I also discovered some beautiful hardback books for adults priced at 10 for $4. I snagged 10 of these, knowing they’ll also score a tidy profit.
In addition to these finds, I picked up a cool frame, an interesting bottle with a music-box base, and a couple of other things before heading over to the second building. This smaller structure is lined with shelves filled mostly with glass and ceramics.
But look what I discovered on these shelves! This coveted set of vintage Butterfly Gold Pyrex in beautiful condition.
I also picked up a Japanese basket, some antique bottles, and a few pieces of pottery for the pottery display in my shop, which always needs re-stocking. After exploring both buildings, I left with plenty of great merchandise and a desire to return to Community Helping Place to shop again!
