Robert T. “Bob” McCoy, age 84, Mt. Airy, Georgia, went to be with The Lord on Friday, November 20, 2015 at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. McCoy was born on July 9, 1931 in Banks County, Georgia to the late Archie Broadus and Lillie Mae Eubanks McCoy. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Mount Airy Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Director. Mr. McCoy was a 32nd Degree Mason and York Rite, Scottish Rite, and a Shriner. He was a decorated U.S. Army Veteran having received The Purple Heart for his service to his country during the Korean Conflict. Mr. McCoy received his Bachelor of Science Degree from The University of Georgia. He was a die hard “Dawg Fan”. He was also a loyal and dedicated instructor in the automotive division of North Georgia College with 28 years of service.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Anne McElhannon McCoy; brothers, Bill McCoy; Mack McCoy; sisters, Sue Dobbins; Lucille Wheeler; grandchildren, Casey McCoy, Andrew Cowart, Jason McCoy, and Lori Kelley. Mr. McCoy was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Doug Downer; Linda and Randall Gragg; Teresa and Johnny Kelley; MaDonna and Terry Grant; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Mary Ann McCoy; Mike and Deborah McCoy; and Mitchell and Katharine McCoy. 14 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 23, 2015 at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia with Rev. Butch Franklin and Rev. Sanford Kimbrell officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Rabun County DAV Post #15, the Grant-Reeves V.F.W. Post 7720, and the American Legion Post # 84. Masonic Graveside rites will be conducted by the Mount Airy F. & A.M. Lodge # 141
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, November 22, 2015.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
