Deputies arrested a Commerce man and charged him with felony aggravated child molestation, the Banks County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) says.
60-year-old Samuel McDuffie was charged following a traffic stop. Deputies pulled him over to serve the warrant, having been warned he may be armed.
“After arresting the suspect, a firearm with multiple fully loaded magazines were located near the driver’s seat,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a post on social media.
Deputies took McDuffie into custody and seized the weapon around 4:30 p.m. on June 8 following the traffic stop on Highway 59.
In the initial post announcing an arrest, the sheriff’s office called rumors that other agencies were involved “false.” The arrest coincided with the monthly Northeast Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety training event at Banks Crossing, but BCSO said it was not connected to the arrest.
“There is no need to panic due to their presence. It is just a training event,” the sheriff’s office posted.
The sheriff’s office says the incident that resulted in McDuffie’s arrest is still being investigated, and additional charges may be filed.
