Lady Lions’ season ends

Rocky Mount, N.C. – After an opening round loss in the USA South tournament, the road to the championship was a tough one including a seventh inning rally in game two v. Ferrum, but the road went through Averett and the Cougars came out on top 2-0 Saturday morning. The loss ends the Lady Lions’ 2015 campaign as Piedmont finished with a 17-14 record overall and a 13-11 league record.

The Lady Lions were expecting a tough road after losing the opener in the double elimination tournament, but what hardly anyone predicted was that Averett would lose on the first day as well forcing them to claw their way back into the title picture.

This was mostly a pitchers duel throughout as there were only a combined eight hits in the two run game, but Piedmont ended up with only three hits on the day scattered in three different innings by three different batters.

Those three hits came off the bats of Allyson Gentry, Allison Vaughn and USA South Rookie of the Year Jessica Bagwell. Vaughn and Bagwell both went 1-for-2 in the game with a walk as well.

The final decision of the season belonged to Sarah Walker who took the loss following a good outing tossing the complete game giving up just five hits, two runs and striking out four. Walker ends the season with a 13-10 record pitching over 140 innings for the Lady Lions in 2015.

Averett’s two runs came in the first and fourth with the first run coming after Walker walked a batter who then stole second and scored on the first hit of the game. The final run came later in the fourth inning as once again a walk in the first few batters came back to be costly as two more hits drove in that run.

Four seniors ended their time in the Green and Gold with storied careers including a historical season a year ago recording the most wins in program history. Those four seniors are Abby Atkinson, Maryrose Burns, Whitney Wolfe, and madison Eubanks.
The Lady Lions wrap up the season at 17-14 overall for the sixth straight winning season under Head Coach Terry Martin who reached a historic mark this season recording his 400th victory of his career, all at the helm of the Lady Lion program. Martin now has 417 victories with the Lady Lions following the 2015 season.
