Fayetteville, N.C. – Brothers Nathan Metzger and Matthew Metzger share more than just a bloodline and a winning record in doubles play for the Green and Gold. The pair now also boast the title USA South all-conference selection as Nathan earned second team all-conference honors while older brother Matthew was named an honorable mention pick.
Freshman Nathan Metzger stormed on to the scene in his debut campaign as he and Matthew became a clutch doubles pairing and affectionately became known across the athletic department as “Metzger squared.” The two have made their way into the top 10 in the league in doubles pairings with an 11-5 record with one of the top three doubles records in the #1 doubles slot.
In singles play, Nathan has split time at the #1 and #2 singles position boasting a 4-2 record in the #2 singles. He has an even 8-8 record throughout the season and has won his last three outings in part of a four match win streak for the Lions.
Older brother Matthew, now a sophomore for the Lions, followed up a strong freshman campaign with another solid year in the Green and Gold. Matthew finished the yaer 6-9 in singles play winning two of his last three outings as he too split time at the #1 and #2 singles with a 3-3 record in the #1 singles spot.
The doubles pairing was instrumental in the Lions being able to jump in front of many competitors and take an early lead helping pave the way to success in the singles competitions. They have now won six in a row, all coming within a nine day span, in that #1 doubles spot carrying momentum with them into the championship tournament.
Against LaGrange College, the Lions first opponent in the USA South Men’s Tennis Championship Tournament, the Metzgers took an 8-5 decision in the #1 doubles spot as their fourth win in a row to that point. In singles play, Piedmont took all six decisions as well winning at #1 in three sets with Matthew Metzger accounting for the win over Henrique Sizenando. Brother Nathan won in straight sets over Cantrell at the #2 spot 6-0, 6-2.
The two will get their chance against the Panthers in the postseason as the Lions are set to face LaGrange Friday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m. in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
