John Edward Zimmerman, Jr.

(NowHabersham.com)

John Edward Zimmerman, Jr. went to be home with his Lord on September 7, 2018 after his second battle with cancer. He was 79 years old. When the time of his departure had come, he was peacefully in line with the apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7. John also believed, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge, will award unto me on that day.”

John was a faithful husband to his wife Harriett Dunbar Zimmerman for 57 years! They found unity in their mutual love for the Lord and His Word and are members of Christ Presbyterian Church in Clarkesville, Georgia. They were in agreement that John’s eleven years in remission were some of the best years in their marriage – a blessing and gift from above!

John was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Topel Zimmerman, his father John Edward Zimmerman, Sr., and his sisters Barbara Feuchter and Alice French. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his beloved children John Edward Zimmerman, III and his wife Jenny, and his daughter Amy White. He had a deep love for his grandchildren, A.J. White and his wife Alicia, Brittany White, and Christopher White. His great grandson Kaden Tyre had a special place in John’s heart because during the five years Gramps and Nana helped to raise him – Kaden loved his Gramps and Gramps loved him back!

As a young man, John attended the United States Coast Guard Academy for three years and sailed on the training ship Eagle, and made two Trans-Atlantic voyages. Then, he went on to graduate from Georgia Institute of Technology and gained a Masters degree in engineering from the University of Illinois. He had a rewarding career in structural engineering until his recent relapse. John was a man of strength, integrity and commitment and glorified his Lord by being a dedicated protector and provider for his family. He will be greatly missed by all.

A graveside service will be held at Hillside Memorial Gardens at 12:00 noon on Saturday, September 15, 2018, officiated by Pastor Hobie Wood.
