A driver eluded arrest in Cornelia after fleeing from a roadblock and crashing into a house.
Georgia State Patrol Post 7 Commander SFC Chad Johnson says the vehicle turned around at a checkpoint Friday night then traveled back toward Wayside Street on Level Grove Road. “Just past the bank, the subject straightened the curve and traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a house,” Johnson says. The driver then fled on foot.
Officers pursued the vehicle but the driver was gone by the time they arrived. They were unable to ID the driver. They were able to track down the owner of the vehicle at the house the car was registered to on Wayside Street. She told officials she did not know who was driving her car. Johnson says officers are certain the owner was not the one behind the wheel based on the distance from the crash site to where she was located.
Authorities conducted a search of the area. A K9 unit was unable to pick up the subject’s track and the search was called off after about an hour.
Johnson says there’s no indication at this time as to why the driver fled. The house that was hit sustained moderate damage.
