A Lawrenceville man recovered by emergency personnel from Lake Lanier near Van Pugh Park has died.

Marine Rescue crews from Hall County Fire Rescue (HCFR) were called to the park on Gaines Ferry Road just after 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 21.

The victim, identified as Brayan Tarasona, 22, was located quickly and was pulled from the water by HCFR’s remote-operated vehicle (ROV).

Tarasona was transported to the hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead just before 8:30 p.m., says Hall County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer B.J. Williams.

Investigators with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office determined Tarasona and two other people had gone to the park to swim. Witnesses said the victim swam out into deep water, and as he was attempting to return to shore, he went under and did not resurface.

Tarasona’s body was transported to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office corrected the victim’s name after this article was published. The article has been updated to reflect the change.
