Wintry weather contributed to wreck that demolished county sign

It was a close call for a Clarkesville woman who drove into a sign outside the Habersham County Administration Building  on Thursday. She wasn’t injured, but the sign was destroyed.

The State Patrol says 27-year-old Kayla Otto of Clarkesville was traveling south on GA-17 in a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The vehicle in front of her slowed to make a lefthand turn onto Rocky Branch Road. The Trooper says Otto was “traveling too fast on the wet road in the snow” and was unable to stop. She swerved to avoid hitting the vehicle and ran headlong into the sign.

The accident happened just before 5 p.m. on Feb. 20 during a light snow. Earlier in the day, rain and freezing rain fell across Habersham County.

The Trooper charged Otto with driving too fast for conditions and gave her a warning for following too closely and failure to maintain her lane.

Habersham County Administrator Phil Sutton says the county will file with insurance to replace the sign, which was still relatively new. It was installed when the new administration building was built in 2018.
