Woodville Elementary student Erik Jordan is this year’s state-level winner for 4th grade writing in the Young Georgia Author’s competition. His poem, “Nature’s Hymn,” was recognized as the best submission in the state in his age category.
The Board of Education recognized Jordan at their May 10 meeting, during which Superintendent Matthew Cooper presented him with a trophy, and Jordan read his poem to the board.
“He is a role model for all of Woodville’s students, not just academically, but I can say he’s a student of character as well,” said Woodville principal Lana Jones. “We expect big things from him. He will continue, I’m sure, to represent Habersham County in many ways.”
The Young Georgia Authors contest is a statewide program in which students in kindergarten through 12th grade submit their writing, which competes at the school, county, and state levels. Jordan is the first Habersham County student to bring in this award.
You can read “Nature’s Hymn” below:
See daybreak overwhelm the night
See her wings lift and take flight
Hear beautiful symphonies of beautiful Earth
Her graceful doe will soon give birth
A gentle wind tickles the trees
Each morning like this, night shall seize
There is a story for each creation
Earth, how gorgeous her population
A squirrel will frolic with their neighbor
Everyday, beavers labor
It is now evening, and animals have gone home
Nocturnal come out and begin to roam
Nighttime stories now continue
Each bat wakes up, for holes and logs they break into
Dark doesn’t last long, dawn breaks oh so dim
New stories awaken, Nature’s hymn
