DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont women’s soccer team is set for a CCS semifinal battle at Maryville. Kickoff is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 6 p.m.
The winner will then take on the winner of the other semifinal between No. 2 seed Belhaven and No. 3 seed Covenant this Saturday, Nov. 4.
LAST TIME OUT:
Piedmont 2, LaGrange 1 (10/28/23 at Piedmont)
The Piedmont women’s soccer team escaped a second-half deficit and stormed past LaGrange for a 2-1 victory in the CCS Tournament Quarterfinals on an unseasonably warm afternoon in Demorest.
Sierra Judson delivered the equalizer and the game-winner in the second half, turning the deficit into a win and leading Piedmont into the semifinals.
REGULAR SEASON V. THE SCOTS:
Maryville 3, Piedmont 0 (10/18/23 at Maryville)
The Piedmont women’s soccer team was unable to generate offense in a 3-0 road loss at Maryville.
In a rematch of last season’s CCS Championship, the Scots were in control throughout, scoring once in the first half and adding a pair of insurance goals in the second half to pull away.
Maryville returned the favor on the Lions, as Piedmont was victorious in 3-0 fashion in last season’s regular season matchup in Demorest.
PIEDMONT NOTES:
- Saturday’s win over LaGrange marked the sixth consecutive season in which the Lions have won a postseason game.
- The Lions will be looking for a repeat of the spring of 2021 in which they fell in shutout fashion at Maryville in the regular season before turning the tables on the Scots with a 1-0 victory in the USA South West Division Tournament Final.
MARYVILLE NOTES:
- The Scots took home four of the five major postseason awards from the CCS.
- Hannah Smoot was named CCS Offensive Player of the Year while Hailey Cartt was named Defensive Player of the Year.
- In addition, Pepe Fernandez earned Coach of the Year honors and Madison McDonald was named top rookie.
PLAYER TO WATCH:
Sierra Judson
After earning All-CCS Second Team honors for the second straight season, the Wethersfield, Connecticut native stepped up when her team needed it most. Judson scored the equalizer and then the game-winner in the second half of Piedmont’s 2-1 quarterfinal win over LaGrange, turning a one-goal deficit into a victory in the second half.
