Authorities have identified the woman who was struck and killed by a train Thursday morning in Gainesville as Bonnie Carrillo, age 50. Officials say Carillo was a member of Gainesville’s homeless community. She was walking across the tracks on Dorsey Street near Industrial Boulevard when the train hit her.
Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) investigators responded to the scene just before 7 a.m. on Feb. 2 and found the victim critically injured. She was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where she died from her injuries.
“At this time, investigators believe the victim was crossing the train tracks and possibly tried to retrieve an item she had dropped,” says HCSO Public Information Officer B.J. Williams. “An approaching train was unable to stop and struck the victim as she was searching the tracks.”
The sheriff’s office is working in conjunction with Norfolk Southern Railway on the incident investigation.
Officials say they have notified Carillo’s family of her death.
