Winter returns to the North Georgia mountains

Snow fell across the North Georgia mountains. On Wednesday morning, folks in Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Hiawassee, and points west awoke to a winter landscape. Meanwhile, there were sighs of relief and disappointment in the lower elevations, where people were greeted with gray skies and cool temps but little to no precipitation.

By early morning on Feb. 19, Catoosa County reported over half an inch of snow, and roads in Dade County—Georgia’s westernmost point— were covered with it, making for hazardous driving conditions.

The National Weather Service reported light snow across the higher elevations of  Lumpkin County. Still, in neighboring White County, there was only some light rain, according to WRWH Radio’s Dean Dyer.

Schools across the region were closed on Wednesday, with Habersham, Tallulah Falls, and Cherokee County Schools operating on a 2-hour delay.

Much of northern Georgia remains under a Winter Weather Advisory through 1 a.m. Thursday. That advisory has been expanded to include Bartow, Cherokee, Haralson, Paulding, and Polk counties in Northwest Georgia.
