At least five school systems in Northeast Georgia closed Friday over concern about the weather. The remnants of what was Hurricane Nicole threatened to bring heavy rain and high winds into the region.

While the weather has not been as severe as predicted, school closures still caused at least one middle school to postpone plans for its Veterans Day celebration.

Hilliard Wilbanks Middle School in Demorest has rescheduled its Veterans Day Program for Monday, November 14. Principal Chris Chitwood says the event will start at 10 a.m. in the school gymnasium. It will be followed by a reception for veterans and their families.

“Here at Wilbanks Middle school, we feel it is our honor to recognize our veterans who gave their all for our freedom,” says school registrar Shawna Jones.

All local veterans are invited to attend.
