(Cleveland)- The speed limit on the south end of the Appalachian Parkway has caught the attention of both the City of Cleveland and White County officials. Monday the White County Board of Commissioners approved a list from the Georgia Department of Transportation of roads in the county and their speed limits. During the discussion of this item, Commissioner Terry Goodger ask the question about the speed limit on the south end of the parkway.

County Manager Mike Melton advised that it was 55. The commissioners indicated they would like to see the speed limit lowered.

The commissioners agreed to send a letter to GDOT District Engineer Brent Cook, requesting the lower speed limit. Commission Chairman Travis Turner said, “at the red lights, that we are in agreement with the city of Cleveland that the red lights themselves need to be 45.”

Commissioner Edwin Nix said Public Safety Director David Murphy advised there have 24 accidents on the south side of the parkway since January first this year.

Two of those accidents resulted in fatalities.

Nix says, “Reduction of speed near the red lights could possibly reduce the number of accidents. I am only concerned with the safety of the people who travel through these intersections daily.”
