Middle schoolers encouraged to participate in “Walk-in”

(Cleveland )- White County students were among thousands across the United States Wednesday, that took 17 minutes to honor and recognize the victims of a mass shooting at a Parkland, Fla. high school on Valentine’s Day.

National School Walkout Day, or Walkout Wednesday was to recognize the victims who lost their lives in a school setting and to make a statement about gun violence and laws in the country.

White County School  Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson said everything at the schools here went well, with about 50 at the high school, 15 at the ninth grade and 200 at the middle school participating in the walkout.  “Our kids were very respectful and returned to class without incident,” said Wilson.

While some students in White County walked out Wednesday, White County Middle School students were being urged to take a different approach to the Parkland, Fl. shooting.  Middle School Principle Kristi Gerrells challenged her students to participate in a Walk-in Warrior Kindness Drive.  in order to honor the lives lost in the school shooting students were being asked to perform 17 Random Acts of Kindness during the one month anniversary week.

Students will perform one act of kindness to honor each of the 17 victims. The school will log each act and will mail the log sheets to Majory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, as a sign of support and love.

This Walk-In Warrior Kindness Drive idea was developed by teacher Melanie Lawhorn and her students at East Jackson High School.
