The White County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of online and telephone scams circulating in the area.
According to the sheriff’s office, scammers have reportedly been calling victims posing as law enforcement officers, debt collectors, and bank employees to trick victims into sending them money via cryptocurrency machines.
The scammers will typically claim victims have an unpaid fine or warrant, owe money to a government agency, have a compromised bank account, or have an outstanding debt that must be paid.
The sheriff’s office advises that it will never call to notify anyone of warrants or outstanding citations, nor will it ask for fees to be paid via cryptocurrency or cryptocurrency machines.
Anyone who believes they may have been scammed is asked to contact the sheriff’s office immediately at 706-865-5177.
