(Cleveland)- The economic picture in White County is looking good, considering the downturn in other parts of the country. To emphasize that during this week’s county commission meeting, White County Finance Director Jodi Ligon told the commissioners about increased collections in every sales tax collection.
Ligon said both the July 2020 Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) and Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) receipts are the highest ever recorded, with both up by 14 percent from July 2019. In addition, the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) registered it’s largest a monthly amount in July, with $153,972 collected that up 15 percent. On top of all that, the county’s portion of Hotel Motel Tax was up 16 percent from last year, with $120,932 received.
Commission Chairman Travis Turner reacted to the positive news during the meeting saying “Growth is not just here, I think our county will continue to grow and I know, we as a board are very pleased with those numbers considering in March and April we weren’t sure where we were going to go given the Coronavirus/Covid-19 situation. So we are very thankful to be where we are today. ”
The increase in tax revenue helps the county pay for projects like the $94-thousand dollar security camera upgrade project that was announced at Monday’s meeting.
