(Cleveland) – Even in the dead of Winter White County has received its 19th confirmed positive rabies case for 2020. White County Environmental Health Manager Sean Sullivan said Monday that the incident occurred on Thursday, December 17th in the Hunt Road area.
Sullivan said a homeowner found that a skunk had entered the dog’s pen at approximately 9:30 p.m. and was chasing his dog. The homeowner put the skunk down and contacted the White County Environmental Health Department the following morning.
According to Sullivan the specimen was prepared and shipped to the State lab.
The Health Department was notified last Wednesday that the skunk was positive for rabies.
Sullivan said the dog involved had a history of rabies vaccination and will get a booster shot while undergoing a 45-day observational quarantine.
Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid skunk was located. If you live in this area and have concerns about rabid animal exposure, please contact White County Environmental Health at 706-348-7698 during normal business hours.
