White County officials want to take a look at new options for the how to manage the county’s elections in the future.
Currently, the county’s probate judge also serves as county elections superintendent.
During Monday’s White County Commission meeting, commission chairman Travis Turner said they know changes are coming. With more people voting and with the retirement of Probate Judge Garrison Baker at the end of next year, they want to look at what other counties of similar size are doing and how to best handle the process.
There are only a few counties that handle the election process the way White County does now; most have an election superintendent and election board that oversees everything.
The commissioners instructed county manager Mike Melton and county clerk Shanda Murphy to work together and come up with some ideas for them to look at.
Turner said, “we’re going to be leaning on Judge Baker a lot for this wisdom and guidance on where we are going with these matters.”
Turner said they want to get some ideas together and whatever direction they want to go the process must be approved by the Georgia General Assembly.
