(Cleveland)- It’s now fourteen, the number of confirmed rabies cases in White County this year. The latest incident occurred on Danny Palmer Road, according to White County Environmental Health Manager Sean Sullivan. Sullivan said on Friday, July 17 the owner of a dog was awakened by barking around 6:30 a.m. he went outside to see what the noise was about.
The homeowner witnessed the dogs attacking a raccoon.
The homeowner was able to separate the animals and kill the raccoon and it was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab – Virology Section in Decatur. Wednesday the health department was notified that the raccoon was positive for rabies.
The dogs had a history of rabies vaccination and will be required to undergo a 45-day observational quarantine and get a rabies booster shot.
