CLEVELAND — White County is still awaiting a final tax digest for the county so the board of commissioners can use those figures to help determine this year’s tax millage rate.
While some counties are looking to increase their tax rates, the White County Board of Commissioners is toying with the possibility of lowering its millage rate.
During a called meeting last week, Commission Chairman Travis Turner revealed that since the budget was adopted, the county has received some additional funds from different agencies that will benefit the county. Turner also said they are aware that property prices have been escalating, but at the same time, inflation has hit everyone with higher costs.
The current county millage rate is 10.75 mills, and Turner said they would like to reduce that rate by at least three-quarters of a mill. Turner said this is only in the discussion phase at this time.
“We still have to officially vote on this, what now looks like the first of August. This is just to give the staff something to be able to advertise what our intentions are,” he said.
All of the White County commissioners indicated that they were in favor of making some kind of reduction in the tax rate.
