White County marked a significant step forward in its commitment to community development with the grand opening of the Yonah Preserve Recreation Center on May 22.
Hosted by the White County Board of Commissioners and the White County Parks and Recreation Department, the event drew local residents, officials, and community leaders to celebrate the new addition to the county’s growing list of public amenities.
Guests explored the state-of-the-art facility, enjoyed complimentary meals from The Varsity Food Truck—courtesy of Charles Black Construction—and celebrated a future centered on recreation, wellness, and togetherness in White County.
The new center includes two full-size basketball courts that can be converted into additional practice courts, four volleyball courts, or six pickleball courts. Additional features include a community room, concessions area, and modern office space for Parks and Recreation staff. A large, furnished outdoor porch adds to the inviting atmosphere, designed to foster social interaction and host community events. Significantly, the building is also equipped to serve as a mass shelter during emergencies.
The facility was designed by BCA Studios of Gainesville, Georgia, and constructed by Charles Black Construction of Cleveland. Officials praised the successful collaboration that brought the project to life.
Chairman Travis Turner began the evening by recounting the history of Yonah Preserve, noting the County’s journey from leasing the land from the State of Georgia in 2013 to fully acquiring it in July 2018. He highlighted a key achievement: “the project was funded and completed with no debt to the County.”
A prayer and blessing were offered by Pastor Chris Anderson of Chattahoochee Baptist Church, followed by remarks from each County Commissioner, all expressing gratitude to those who played a role in making the center a reality.
The center is a major addition to the Yonah Preserve complex, which already includes four baseball fields and playgrounds. A splash pad, three more outdoor pickleball courts, and a pavilion are also nearing completion.
“This center represents years of planning, partnership, and perseverance,” said Turner. “It’s more than a building… it’s a space where community, wellness, and opportunity meet.”
The new Recreation Center symbolizes White County’s dedication to enhancing quality of life for residents and laying a strong foundation for future generations.
