White County BOE looking at full rollback on millage rate

Imagine no education tax millage rate increase this year for White County property owners. That’s what was discussed Thursday night during the White County Board of Education meeting.

School finance director Julie Dorsey shared with the board that according to information they have received on the county tax digest, they could possibly do a full rollback of the millage rate and still have more funds than they budgeted for.

Dorsey said the assessments showed property values in White County have increased by $136 million for the school taxable area. She said with the rollback from the current 16.06 to 14.22 mills it would generate almost $16.5 million and that is $715,000 more than they had budgeted for the next school year.

You have to go back to 2007 for the last time the school tax millage rate was lower.

School Board Chair Missy Jarrard said this could not have come at a better time, “because we are going through such a hard time financially, so that will help just a tiny bit. I’m so impressed with Ms. Dorsey and the work that she does and I’m happy for the citizens of White County,” Jarrard said.

The school board is expected to officially vote on the millage rate at their August 23rd meeting.

The White County Board of Commissioners earlier this month, without seeing the digest figures,  were talking about reducing the county’s portion of the tax millage rate by three-quarters of a mill.
