White County Board of Ed approves ESPLOST resolution

Board seeks continuation of current 1-cent special local option sales tax for education

(Cleveland)- The White County Board of Education last night approved a resolution calling for a referendum for the county voters to decide on a continuation of the current 1 cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax that would be used for education projects.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laurie Burkett says the funds will allow the schools to continue what they are doing now and expand services.

“That money will allow us number one to maintain what we have now, for instance in the next couple of years we will need a new roof at T-Gap so just being able to maintain, being able to push out the latest technology to our students is very, very important and it also allows us the hopes of building new things, “ said Burkett.

Board members stress that this vote will be for a continuation of the one-cent we are paying now, not an additional tax and it will help hold down property taxes.

The board approved the resolution that calls for the ESPLOST vote to be held Tuesday, May 19th. The current ESPLOST is set to end in December 2022.
