Amid a temporary water outage Tuesday, March 4, the city of Demorest has issued a boil water advisory for several areas of the city following maintenance work on fire hydrants by the Public Works Department.
Residents of Glory Lane, Hazel Wood Drive, Carl Loudermilk Road and areas along Hazel Creek at the Camp Creek intersection to the intersection of Dicks Hill also are advised to prepare for a five to six hour water outage on Thursday, March 6, according to city officials.
The advisory is expected to last for approximately five to six hours, starting today. Another
The affected areas include:
- Cedar Avenue to the end of Holly Street
- Walnut Avenue
- Porter Street
- Tennessee Street
During this time, residents may experience a temporary water outage or a significant drop in water pressure. The advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure, as there is a potential risk of microbial contamination in the water supply due to low or no pressure in parts of the system.
To ensure public health and safety, residents in the impacted areas are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking, and food preparation until further notice.
To properly boil tap water for use, follow these steps:
- Heat water until bubbles form quickly from the bottom of the container.
- Continue boiling for at least one minute.
- Remove from heat and allow the water to cool before use.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using boiled tap water or bottled water for the following activities during a boil water advisory:
- Drinking
- Brushing teeth
- Washing food and preparing food (including baby formula)
- Making ice
- Drinking water for pets
Other activities, such as washing clothes or dishes, can be done safely with unboiled tap water, provided proper precautions are taken.
The advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms that the water supply is no longer a public health concern. Residents will be notified immediately when the advisory is lifted. Once the advisory is lifted, customers are instructed to flush all faucets for a minimum of two minutes before using water for drinking or food preparation.
