(Cleveland) – The Cleveland City Council has named Cleveland Police Major Aaron Weiland as the interim police chief until a full-time successor can be found to fill the position.

The appointment was made Monday night during a council meeting along with other first of the year appointments. It follows the retirement of longtime former chief John Foster.

Weiland, who has been with the department for 22 years said he appreciated the confidence the council placed in him and he is ready to start “moving forward, learning, and growing.”

Cleveland Mayor Josh Turner said they have had several meetings in their search for a police chief and hope to have an announcement within the month.
